The best gets better: We improve on 2023’s scores to remain a Detroit Free Press Top Workplace in 2024

The best people make for the best culture. As it turns out, we’ve improved both over the past 365 days. We’re lucky to have each of our outstanding employees on staff, and we’re grateful that they’ve named us as a Detroit Free Press Top Workplace for the second year in a row.

Just as they did in 2023, Energage asked our team about what makes working at Action Benefits so special. And, well, it’s still everything. But, we’re proud of where we’ve grown this past year:

Our employees are well-informed: If you haven’t heard by now, the health insurance industry is in a bit of turmoil. And, in the middle of it all, we’re making some big pivots in how we do business. But we’re handling that transition with grace and clarity: 87% of our team feels well-informed about the important decisions we’re making. When folks are comfortable in their environment, they’re better able to do their core work: taking care of customers.

Staff gets more of the training they want and need: In times of change, staff need top-notch training to help them adapt. We’ve gotten even better at delivering that in the past year: 4 in 5 team members now feel well-supported with formal training opportunities. When our employees know better, they can do better – and they are.

Meetings are a better use of everyone’s time: You know all those meetings that could’ve been an email? We don’t. In the past year, 10% more of our employees agree that meetings are a beneficial use of time. We let our people do their core work – and when we need to meet, it’s with a clear purpose in mind.

And, let’s not forget what got us here in the first place:

Employee benefits aren’t just competitive. They’re extraordinary: Employees at Action Benefits are 30% more likely than their peers to say that they have a good benefit package. Maybe it’s because we pay for the medical deductible on both single and family health insurance contracts. Maybe it’s the no-cost life and disability insurance. Or maybe it’s the endless parade of snacks and wellness events. Maybe it’s all that – and more. Whatever it is, we know it’s important to value our employees in words, compensation, and action (pun absolutely intended).

We ask for – and listen to – all ideas: As the industry evolves, we must also evolve. And no one drives that process better than our current employees. In fact, one of our longest-tenured employees planted the seeds of our innovative co-broker program, allowing us to continue offering services in the small group market. When our people speak, we listen. And then we find ways to execute.

We’re transparent in all we do: We mentioned it above, but it bears repeating: Great communication is the key to successful change management. Last year, our employees already felt well-informed about the new directions we’re moving in: this year, they’re 11% more likely to say that they feel well-informed than their peers at other firms.

And, it’s not like we just have small pockets of brilliance. 91% of staff – up 4% from last year – participated in the survey.

We’re proud to continue fostering a great culture, and remain thankful for our employees’ overwhelming support. This year’s award belongs to them – they’re the ones putting in the work to make Action Benefits a top workplace.
