More than the Marketplace: How Medicaid’s unwinding affects Medicare Supplement

Written by Action Benefits | Apr 12, 2023

The state of Michigan’s Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) clarified rules on transitioning from Medicaid to Medicare for those still enrolled in Medicaid due to the public health emergency.

The pause on Medicaid’s continuation of coverage ended at the beginning of the month, and potentially millions of Americans might lose coverage. But for those who became eligible for Medicare during this time, there is a newly secured avenue to more options.

Guaranteed issue rights must be given to those who are:

  • Enrolled in Part B
  • Still enrolled in Medicaid due to the PHE but qualify for Medicare
  • Enrolled in Part B up to 6 months following Medicaid termination
  • Terminated from Medicaid and applied for a Med Sup plan up to 63 days later
  • Disenrolled voluntarily from Medicaid in favor of Part B or Med Sup
  • Dual-eligible

This order is valid for 90 days after all redeterminations are completed by MDDHS.
